02.04.05 Winning PFI bids Osborne, founded nearly 40 years ago, is one of the leading construction companies in the UK providing solutions in healthcare, education, housing, rail and the civil engineering sectors. Day1 is working with Osborne on two PFI projects, including 'Caring for Croydon', which is an impressive and exciting project, providing exceptional facilities for the healthcare sector. The second PFI bid is for a community hospital in Littlehampton. "What Day1 can bring to these projects is valuable expertise and focus; they will be co-ordinating the look and feel of what we will eventually present. Our team can then focus on developing the content of the proposal, confident in the knowledge that as the scheme progresses, our designs and ideas will be presented coherently and in a way which is approachable to our audiences," says Roger Simons, bid co-ordinator. Private Finance Initiatives represent a significant sector of the construction market, but the bid process is frequently long and complex. A bid team often comprises more than one company and their bid needs to be presented as a co-ordinated proposal, under one umbrella. "This is where we can really add value" comments Tina Carter , Day1 partner. "We can help give the team an identity and clearly communicate their vision. We are also able to pick up on the main characteristics of a proposal and help to promote these in high quality documents and exhibition material to suppor that vision." Day1 has a good deal of experience working with architects and developers, enjoying the synergy that a team of creative minds from different design disciplines can engender. Carter was part of the team that helped put the winning bid documents together for the King Alfred project in Hove which involved working with some 'superstar' architects - Frank Gehry, Piers Gough and Wembley Stadium architects, HOK Sports. She concludes: "We're passionate about good architecture, intelligent planning and our involvement in the promotion of contemporary living and working environments. It's hard to imagine a more exciting and influential field in which to contribute." updated: 01.02.06 STOP PRESS >> C4C wins!! The news broke just before Christmas that the Caring4Croydon team won. This is what they had to say about it... Press Release: February 2006 - The future's set fair for Croydon's older residents. Caring 4 Croydon, the consortium in which UME is one of three shareholder members, has been appointed preferred bidder to develop a visionary project that will transform care for elderly and vulnerable people in Croydon. C4C comprises UME, Geoffrey Osborne and Eldon Housing Association and has been formed solely to deliver Croydon's ambitious £38 million programme. Four new centres are to be built which will provide the borough with 150 residential and nursing places, 40 extra care flats and 128 day care places. All rooms will be bright and airy with en-suite bathrooms and the centres will boast internet links enabling users to maintain contact with family and friends, as well as keeping mentally active. Locally sourced and freshly cooked food will cater for all residents needs and preferences and there will be a healthy living consultation provision alongside on-site fitness suites. "We are delighted with this outcome. It is the culmination of many months of hard work, throughout which we have sought to fulfil the ambitions of all the consortium members and deliver what we believe will be a landmark project. We aim to set new standards of care that will have long term benefits for the people of Croydon," comments Rob Gill, UME bid manager. Commenting on the final appointment, Croydon Council's project director, John Duggleby said "Caring4Croydon concentrated in their bid in listening to what the Council wanted, learning more about the issues and problems posed at the Invitation to Negotiate stage and responding in the BaFO. This has meant that their bid has deepened and matured and the quality and detail of their response has been exemplary in certain areas. For example, their design for dementia has fully adopted and extended the brief and made use of expert input from leading academic and practical sources. The same is shown in their Information Technology and Communication response and their use of external space. C4C offer an ethos that integrates environmental issues into all aspects of their bids, evidenced by Caring4Croydon surpassing the 10% renewable energy sources (to 17%). The major feature of C4C's bid is their approach to partnering with the Council as the client - where C4C offered a very collaborative approach, built around their style of listening, learning and responding." Notes for Editors: UME Investment Co (UMEI) was established in 1996 specifically to develop investment activities in public infrastructure projects. During the first wave of PFI projects, UMEI acted as sponsor and investor in a number of prestigious, groundbreaking schemes, which established the PFI framework. To date, UMEI have completed investments in fourteen PFI projects and has another two projects at the Preferred Bidder stage. The construction value of the projects committed exceeds £600 million.
